TRANSPORTATION FUNDING CONFERENCE
BILL EXPECTED SATURDAY
****Action Requested****
Deliberations continue among the House and Senate
conferees over the fate of a transportation funding
bill. While "progress" is being made, they are
still several votes shy on the Senate side.
Consequently, we expect an "up or down" vote
on some funding package on Saturday, just before
adjournment. Considering the make-up of the conference
committee, it seems likely that the solution is steering
more to using general funds rather than a significant
infusion of "new" revenues.
It is critical that your Delegate and Senator hear
from you this week. It is especially important if you
live or work in their District.
The message is simple:
- Virginia needs a long term, dedicated, and
sustainable transportation funding plan.
- The plan cannot be based on year-to-year
appropriations from the General Assembly.
- Funding should not pit transportation against
other general fund needs like education, health
care, the environment and public safety.
- There must be additional funding packages for
Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.
- We need a solution this year.
We have come too far and gotten too close to a
funding package for transportation to just let the
legislators "go home." A funding package is
still in play, and we should expect our
"leaders" to craft an acceptable solution.
Please take a few minutes and call or e-mail your
Senator and Delegate. Tell them that we need a
transportation funding plan now, and to work to bring
about a compromise that all can accept. Bottom line:
"Don't Come Home Without it."
