SENATE FINANCE PROPOSES ALTERNATIVE
ROAD FINANCING BILL
********Action
Requested********
Yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee amended the
House's transportation funding bill (HB
3202) by eliminating the bill's reliance on an
annual $250 million General Fund appropriation. Instead,
The Committee substituted a $150 vehicle titling fee
that would raise $330 million a year, and authority for
for local governments in Hampton Roads and Northern
Virginia to raise the sales tax to pay for additional
roads.
In reaction to the Senate Finance Committee's vote,
Speaker of the House Howell said, "If this bill
comes over to the House, we may just reject it and go
home."
We have come too far and gotten too close to a
funding package for transportation to just let the
legislators "go home." The funding packages
are still in play, and we should expect our
"leaders" to craft an acceptable solution.
Please take a few minutes and call or e-mail your
Senator and Delegate. Tell them that we need a
transportation funding plan now, and to work to bring
about a compromise that all can accept. Bottom line:
"Don't Come Home Without it."
